Europe ranks Coimbra city as reference for healthy aging

The distinction was approved during the meeting European Innovation Partnership on Active and Healthy Ageing, a pilot project of the EU innovation for active and healthy aging, which aims to "increase the healthy life expectancy of Europeans by two years in 2020," through, inter alia, improving the health and quality of life and ensuring the sustainability of health and social care.

The city and the region of Coimbra is "the only Portuguese area classified with this distinction and shall be included in the group of 32 European regions of reference for the Active and Healthy Ageing" says a note from the office of the mayor.

The candidature of Coimbra to that classification, coordinated by João Malva, professor of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra (UC), was made by the consortium Ageing @ Coimbra and involved the institutional partnership between the City Council, the UC, the Centro Hospitalar Universitário de Coimbra, the Regional Health Center and the Instituto Pedro Nunes.
